Ancient Buildings Were Constructed With Instruction Kits

How were ancient buildings constructed? They followed instructions of course. Archaeologists in Italy have found building directions on structures near Potenza. The actual identity of workers has been ascertained. Greek artisans contributed to the palace at Torre Satriano. Friezes had numbered feminine marks on them while cymatiums had male markings. Ornamental figures were replicated in molds.

It seems pre-Roman people had architects in their midst who looked to the past for inspiration. The buildings were notably Greek in character. Much of daily life even today derives from established ideas. The ancient builders must have had records kept for such purposes. So culture strongly influenced life in the past. The tried and true was the norm for society.

Until today people have resisted change. Indeed, many in our time are uncomfortable with the rapid pace of scientific endeavor. Will the Renaissance occur again? Probably it will when Mankind's experimentation runs out of steam. Then we will build, imitating great structures of times gone by. Perhaps we will do it by following some sort of set instructions.

Saturday with BG and Bunny

Hi there folks, BG here and I am one really nice black Girl. I love to eat (well who doesn't) and I love for the Person to give me some scritches. I especially like it under my chin.
Pardon me while I tell the person in a very loud meow, that just maybe it is time to eat again. Actually everyone here tells me I am just a little chubby. But they are wrong. It is just because I have short little legs etc. Not my fault.
****************************************
Ok folks, here I am back again. Flea bunny here and just look what happened to me. They took all my furs away. It is cooler but I am just a little bit embarrassed. I have no idea where my face is. Listen, Flea Bunny's human Mom has to have some stuff done to her knee on Monday and she could sure use some purrs etc. You can just leave them here, she doesn't have a blog.
**************************************
Have a fantastic day, please.

Flashback Friday

Hi there, I am Angel Squeaky. I originated in a dumpster in Charleston, S.C.  Our Person lost a very nice orange kitty, so a good friend of hers  who found Squeaky in the dumpster gave her to our Mom. Squeaky was a very feral kitty and did not meow, but squeaked, hence the name. I hid under the bed for many many moons and hardly came out at all.
We had an attic in the house that we lived in in Charleston so I spent a lot of time up there but I soon got to be friends with the Mom. And used to sleep with her all the time especially after we moved to Anderson. I stayed inside all the time but escaped once or twice by mistake but was so glad to get back inside. I was very shy.
****************************************
We are sending tons of purrs and prayer to our friend Thunder who is very sick. You can find the story HERE

*************************************

Today is the last day for the auction, so you had better get your bids in. It will end tonight at midnight. Auction

Please have a grand day.

Elderly Drivers Singled Out

There isn't much doubt that there is discrimination against older members of society. This is confirmed by comments from young people that it is unfair that the elderly usually fully own their own homes.  If the young had their way property would be forcibly taken from seniors. It is forgotten however that the elderly took a lifetime to buy their homes.

Another issue is the overreaction to car accidents involving senior drivers. A five year inquiry is going on at present to set a test for doctors to apply to the elderly who want to continue to drive. This is despite the fact that younger drivers have far more car accidents than older people.

Young drivers are more dangerous on the following factors:
1) Poor Hazard Detection;
2) Low Risk Perception;
3) Higher Risk Taking;
4) Not Wearing Seat Belts;
5) Lack of Skill;
6) Taking Alcohol and Drugs;
7) More Crashes When Carrying Passengers; and
8) Accidents After 9:00 pm.

Let's wish the Monash University inquiry good luck in its research. When the test is finalized it can be extended to cover young people as well. This is only fair. Elderly people can always go to state anti-discrimination boards and make this happen.

Artificial Insemination of Budgies

Artificial insemination is common these days particularly to produce better animals for meat in the market. Cattle, sheep and even horse insemination could be said to a be the norm. Higher quality animals is the goal. Should artificial insemination be used to improve animals kept as a hobby?

Breeding show budgies is taken very seriously by many people, so much so that widespread "cheating" takes place. Clipping of cheek patches is not allowed but it is still sneakily done. High quality show winners are usually produced by putting fertile eggs from good birds under "sitters", common budgies with a better breeding instinct.

Michael Pace went to extremes to breed his prizewinner in the opaline class at the Australian National Budgerigar Championships. He practiced artificial insemination in his own way. A capillary tube was used to extract sperm from the male which was then inserted into the female within six hours. A lot of hit-and-miss took place. It took four years to breed the show winner.

Tortie Tuesday

Hi there, Splitters here. I have a funny feeling about why did the Person just bring me into the house.?? Looks like I have to go to the vet's place this afternoon, since I have to have my teeth taken care of tomorrow. And that is because I stay outside most of the time and if the Person leaves me in all night, I would definitely keep her up all night . Oh well, I guess it won't be too bad.
Can you see me giving the Person the raspberry??  So everyone, please, I could use some purrs that all goes all right today. Thanks so much.

Cat Art Prints, After Lunch With Pierre Bonnard

Among cat art prints, Deborah Julian's new After Lunch With Pierre Bonnard is among the most artful and elegant.

Lunch is finished, and the grownups have left the room. Sam takes a place at the head of the table to beginning answering his curiosity by sniffing and looking around. This may be a prelude to his jumping up on the table as soon as he is sure no one in the household will catch him.

Billy, a black cat, has taken a position at the window. He seems intent on watching the goings on in Pierre Bonnard's back yard.

This a slice of life from a cat's life, never quite like this when people are around.

In addition to her cats, Deborah Julian has shown her understand and respect for Bonnard's artwork by retaining the rich, expressive colors especially common in his later paintings. To see more about this and other cat art prints by this artist, check out her website: Deborah Julian Art.

New Finds of Early Humans Do Not Change the Basic Theory

Darwin got it right. Well actually he may not have. Fossils of early humans do not alter basic scientific thought in relation to evolution, Finds do not show a linear development toward advanced Man. Evolution though does tend to predict what new discoveries show. Claims that a particular fossil find is a breakthrough are just not true.

New dinosaur fossils, however, tend to be groundbreaking with regular identification of new type of dinosaurs. Indeed, they seem to have roamed on every continent. The whole book on dinosaur evolution has not yet been written. Time will tell how clear an understanding of it we can get.  It seems evolution of dinosaurs is clearer than that of humans.

New research teams need to be formed to go to all parts of the world and seek answers to evolution of mammals and reptiles, if indeed dinosaurs were reptiles. Some specialists today even question this view.

Saturday Sadness

Hi there, Smoke here. I am doing something weird right now and it is hard to explain. Donkey and horses have hooves and they are kind of like your finger nails. So when we eat to much something happens to make the blood rush to our hoofs where a lot of pressure builds up and makes the bone inside our hoof rotate and put a lot of pressure on the sole of our hoof. All this process is called foundering. It has other names too.

Anyway, the really sad part is that the cause of this happening to me is that we have had a lot of rain here and so our grass is very very rich and that is why I am having this problem. I have been in a lot of pain and lie down a lot. I have to take lots of medicine and the really bad part is that I cannot go back outside in the pasture until next November. There is not a cure for this, just have to control it somehow.
Hi there Joe, here and would like to know why I have to be shut up too. My hooves are just dandy. But I guess I have to keep my friend Smoke company. Guess I will get my skinny figure back now but this is just NOT any fun. Smoke can barely walk much less play with me. Hopefully his little hooves will feel better as soon as we get the special pain killing medicine for him.  Don't  you love me modeling my belly??

Should the Government Pay for Ipilimumab?

How can the state pay for drugs that are shown to be effective against disease but cost far too much? Regularly, someone will be on a current affairs television program and point their finger at the government for not continuing to supply their needed medication. In the long term a government must balance the books. There is simply not enough revenue to provide new expensive drugs.

A new treatment for melanoma called Ipilimumab is very effective, but it costs $120,000 for a three month course. It stops the cancer from spreading beyond the skin. Ipilimumab can also be used to treat some types of lung cancer.

Should the government subsidize this drug? Like all medications there are side effects that can be severe in some patients. Symptoms include constipation, diarrhea, urination complications, bloating, stomach pain, fever and breathing difficulties.

The drug usually extends life by several months. In some cases patients survive for a year. A value judgement is needed to decide whether this treatment is added to the pharmaceutical benefits list. Obviously, there are many new drugs that prolong life for a relatively short period. Personally, if I was to get melanoma I would not worry about extending my life for maybe a year. I would be looking at the quality of my final days of life.

Flashback Friday

Hi there, Ande here on the left as a tiny puppy and that is BB asking just exactly who I am. This was taken 11years ago since Ande just turned 11 years old.
Hi there, my name is Little Bit or better known as Bitsy and as we said last Friday, I was BB's brother. I was such a nice kitty and I took my job very seriously of looking after my sister BB. BB and I after we got to trusting the Person here, would sit with her on a trunk in the barn, one and each side and we would have the best long talks.
Bitsy here again. I got into a lot of fights unfortunately and I guess that was to keep everyone away from BB. There were many times that I would show up with some really big abscesses. So I had to go the vet quite a bit. Then one day I didn't come home from my travels and both the Person and BB waited and waited and I just never made it home. I was well loved so I had a good life while I was here.

Sorry about these pictures but they were taken with a regular camera and scanned. This was all way before blogging for us started. BB's story will continue next Friday.

Internet Puts Pressure on Jobs for Older Workers

The Internet is putting more people out of work and this is only the beginning. As more advanced algorithms are being developed established jobs are under threat. It will not only be lawyers and professional photographers employed by newspapers who get the chop. Unless you are in work that involves human problem solving like plumbers, mechanics and vehicle body repairers your job will face "extinction".

Most of the burden will fall on older workers. Retail, for example, only wants teenagers who can be paid a pittance while "training". Open discrimination occurs against people over 45. They are simply not wanted. This barrier age has fallen in recent years. Computerized job selection processes cuts them off at the beginning. Their resumes are not even looked at. If they go personally to apply for a position they face insulting comments and bad jokes.

Employers are no longer afraid of telling them directly that they are too old. Many have simply given up on seriously looking for work and they just do the minimum to justify payments from Centrelink.

Wordy Wednesday, Purrs needed

Hi there Mew Mew here and I had to go to that vet place yesterday. I am very sick. I had a temp of 104 and a stuffy nose and was sneezing  a little bit. The Person found me in the morning and could tell how sick I was because my third eyelid had come up. So that silly lady put a huge jacket on and some gloves, got the carrier and I felt so bad, I let her put me into that darn thing. I can be a little feisty and I guess she didn't want bloody arms.
So I sang all the way to the vet and then I was a good girl while I was there at that place. I had to be stuck 3 times and all kinds of other bad stuff. I have an upper respiratory infection. So that Person brings me home and shuts me in the bathroom. Now for revenge, I kept her up all night crying and crying and crying. You see I am used to staying outside. This morning I escaped since she is not as fast as she used to be getting out the door, I am under the bed in the bedroom and will not come out.

Now, the Person has a question, what can she use to disinfect the whole bedroom and now the bedroom??? We just don't want everyone sick again.
